American Red Cross Lifeguard certification includes First Aid and CPR for the professional rescuer (AED training is included with this class).  The Lifeguard and first aid certification is good for 3 years.  The CPR must be recertified annually. 

Now you have two Certification authorities that provide training for CPR – American Red Cross and American Heart Association.   The two classes that match the training are the Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer w/AED and the American Heart Association’s CPR for Heath Care Provider w/AED course.  These two courses cover the same information and training.

The next issue is that the Red Cross requires Annual recertification for CPR and the American Heart Association only requires recertification every two years so a lifeguard would not be in compliance with their certifications from the Red Cross if they do not do the CPR recertification Annually even though the AHA says that there certification is good for two years. 

Midlakes swim coach requirement:

Lifeguard/ First Aid renewed every three years or Safety Training for Swim Coaches plus First Aid renewed every three years  

Plus

Red Cross – CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED renewed Annually

Or

AHA – CPR for Heath Care Provider with AED renewed Annually    

The AED was added as a required element two years ago to CPR training.
